We’re in summer conference season! As we get ready to head to the 40th annual American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) conference, Dr. Nina Crowley chats with Dr. Anne Rogers, the incoming president of the ASMBS to discuss the meeting and her upcoming presidency. Dr. Ann Rogers attended Cornell University, and Cornell University Medical College. She completed an internship and residency at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, where she was later named Director of the General Surgery Residency Program. She spent an additional year in fellowship training in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, is the vice chair for Leadership and Professional Development in the Department of Surgery and now directs the Surgical Weight Loss Program.
Dr. Rogers will focus on ending the stigma of obesity which includes increasing access to care for patients with obesity, advocating for policy changes, and the importance of sharing patient stories. They also discuss the impact of bias and stigma in the field of obesity and the need for a cultural shift in how obesity is perceived. The conversation highlights the need for collaboration among different treatment approaches and the importance of personalized care for patients with obesity. We’ve come a long way, and we have so much work to do!
